Wiz Khalifa is telling his teenage son to pump the brakes on marijuana until he’s lived a little first.
During a recent livestream, the Pittsburgh rapper opened up about the conversation he’s having with his 13-year-old, Sebastian, who’s starting to see his friends experimenting with weed.
Wiz explained that he’s pushing his son to focus on building a life before diving into the smoking lifestyle, and there’s actual science backing up why that’s solid parenting.
“Go through life, do productive stuff and then figure out how to train yourself with marijuana,” Wiz said during the interview.
He emphasized that young people need to understand the difference between casual use and getting stuck in a cycle where smoking becomes their entire identity.
“Everybody doesn’t make it out of the loving to smoke pot and being lazy and hanging with their friends stage,” he continued, pointing out that many people who start young never develop beyond that point.
The rapper started smoking himself around age 16, so he’s speaking from experience about what happens when you begin early.
He now smokes 30 joints daily, a habit that’s gotten him into legal trouble, including a nine-month sentence in Romania after he was arrested for smoking onstage at a festival in 2024.
But his advice to his son reflects something neuroscientists have been studying for years.
Research shows that cannabis use during adolescence can actually interfere with brain development, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, which handles decision-making and impulse control.
The brain doesn’t finish developing until around age 25, and THC exposure during those critical years can cause accelerated thinning of that region.
Studies from UC San Diego found that teens who use cannabis show slower gains in memory, attention, and thinking skills compared to their peers.
Interestingly, teen marijuana use has actually declined in states where it’s been legalized, dropping as much as 35 percent in the earliest legalization states, which contradicts the fear that legal access would spike youth use.
What makes Wiz’s parenting approach align with medical consensus is his focus on delaying use and building a foundation first.
Wiz Khalifa’s advice about prioritizing life goals before experimenting with substances mirrors what addiction specialists and neurologists recommend for protecting developing brains.
His son’s generation is growing up in a world where cannabis is increasingly normalized, but the science is clear that waiting matters.
Sebastian’s got a parent who’s been through it all and is trying to steer him toward a different path than the one he took.
