Donald Trump traded his signature blond for a darker shade of brown, and the internet has plenty to say about it. The president was photographed at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, boarding Air Force One with noticeably darker, less voluminous hair before his Bedminster golf weekend. Photos of the new look spread fast, and reactions rolled in within minutes.

Journalist Aaron Rupar asked online, “What in the world is going on with Trump’s hair?” Writer Molly Jong-Fast quipped online, “Trump is now a brunette!” Attorney George Conway poked fun at the change too, joking about invoking the 25th Amendment over it.

Comedian Samantha Ruddy joked online that the president was simply due for “a change.” The new color capped off a summer of nonstop scrutiny over Trump’s hair.

The scrutiny goes back weeks, to an August 14 event where Trump joked about “puffing up” his hair with certain products. Ten days later, a White House event marking the new school year showed off yet another style, this time with a flipped side part.

Just three days earlier, Trump had directly denied wearing a wig during a Rose Garden dinner for GOP lawmakers. He pointed to a windy 2024 campaign rally in Ohio, saying he’d “had to suffer” with wig rumors for years. That denial followed weeks of speculation that started with a fuller, more voluminous look at an August 5 speech in Las Vegas.

Democrats have needled Trump over the changes too, posting older photos of his hair next to more recent images to highlight the shift. Reactions to Friday’s photos split along familiar lines, with critics mocking the look and supporters shrugging it off as no big deal.

Snopes’ review of the Las Vegas photos found no way to confirm or rule out a hairpiece. That uncertainty has only fueled more theories since Friday’s photos went viral. Some of the speculation traces back decades, to a widely reported 1989 scalp procedure detailed in a biography that cited Trump’s first wife’s court testimony.

Trump has denied wig rumors since 2015, when he let a supporter onstage in South Carolina tug his hair to prove it was real.
