Queen Latifah faces a tough choice between two singers on her team after their Lauryn Hill cover wins over the other coaches on The Voice.
Alt Bloom and Morgan Lett perform “Ex-Factor” in a preview of the battle rounds, which begin Monday, October 12. The duet leaves the first-time coach struggling to decide which artist should move forward on her team.
“You’re both winners to me,” Latifah tells them in the preview. “You’re both in my top. Wow, this is wild.”
Riley Green leans toward Lett because of her energy, while Kelly Clarkson favors Bloom after hearing his range. Adam Levine also praises Bloom’s range but leaves the final call to Latifah.
Latifah becomes emotional as she praises their work together and the arrangement.
Latifah will choose one of the two singers to advance on Team Queen.
For Latifah, who joined the coaching panel this season, this round also means sharing a mentor who helped shape her own approach to the business.
Patti LaBelle is advising her singers during the battles.
Executive producer Audrey Morrissey said Latifah specifically wanted her team to learn from someone who had guided her.
“It was a really big deal for her to get Patti because Patti was her mentor,” Morrissey said.
That support comes as Latifah learns the demands of the job herself.
Before the season began, she called former coach John Legend for advice about how the competition worked and what to expect.
She said he reassured her she was joining for the right reasons.
Latifah also described her aim as giving the contestants room to show who they are, rather than making the show about her own experience.
“It’s about me just trying to see them and giving them that shot,” she said.
The choices in these early rounds will determine who gets a chance to reach a longer run of live shows.
Season 30 is bringing back six weeks of live competition, with viewers voting in real time and results announced that same night.
The battle-round premiere airs Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC, with the episode available the next day on Peacock.
